The featured Ford F-150 XL SuperCrew 4×4 may be a basic ride, but with $9,000 sitting in its 5-foot-5 short-box, it pays to obey an old proverb — don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!
The thirteenth-generation Ford F-150 heads into 2020 without significant change. In this case, the XL is sparsely equipped with a vinyl floor covering, manual mirrors and door locks to go along with a thin four-speaker sound system. It is, however, comfortable with seating for up to six riders and a 60/40 flip-up rear seat that allows bulky items to be stowed in a lockable area. Auto high-beams and forward collision warning with auto-braking are standard features.

The XL arrives with a 3.3-litre V6 that pushes a healthy 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission and all four wheels. While the six-speed box is missing the extra fuel-saving gears of its 10-speed counterpart it does have normal, sport and tow/haul modes. The latter stretches out the gearshifts to keep the engine in its sweet spot when hauling a trailer. As equipped, the XL can tow up to 3,357 kilograms.
The 4×4 high setting is really only designed to add traction on snowy or icy roads; and the four-low used for off-roading. As such, in normal, dry driving conditions it is best left in rear-wheel-drive to prevent drivetrain wind-up.
The Verdict
The 2020 Ford F-150 XL gets Good crash test ratings in all disciplines including the driver and passenger side small-offset tests, but has a Poor score for the headlight performance. The XL’s forward collision prevention system has not been tested.

There are three recalls. The first (#2019437) states, “On certain vehicles, seats with a manual recliner may not meet the strength requirements of Canadian regulations. A seatback with reduced strength may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash.” Dealers will inspect the driver and front passenger seat recliners and replace the structures as required.
The second (#2019568) says, “On certain trucks, a connection on the battery positive terminal could come loose . This can result in a loss of instrument panel displays, braking or steering assist, or cause the engine to stall.” Dealers will clean and tighten the positive battery cable as needed.
The third (#2019666) states, “On certain trucks, the bead area of the spare tire may have been damaged when it was mounted onto the rim. Over time, this could cause the bead wire to separate and may result in tire failure.” Dealers will replace the tire.
The projected resale value of the 2020 Ford F-150 XL SuperCrew 4×4 in 2022, after being driven an average of 20,000 km/year, is $24,350.
The Ford F-150 XL SuperCrew 4×4 arrives with a massive $9,000 combined Unhaggle discount, which leaves a sticker of $37,879. This price includes freight and PDI along with other mandatory government fees. It does not include sales tax.
