Calgary’s Motorcycle Awareness Ride aims to ensure motorcyclists are aware of motorists, and that motorists are aware of motorcyclists. With the ride celebrating its 30 th anniversary in 2021, spokesperson Mick Cawthorn says it continues to be an important message to spread. “There have been more motorcycle accidents this year than most other years,” he says, and adds, “I believe that’s partially because of COVID, and people just want to get out on the road and they’re not paying attention – and that’s both motorcyclists and motorists.”

Over the years, the ride has supported a number of different charities, but the focus has always been on kids and the handicapped. This year, all funds raised go to The Magic of Christmas. “We’ve raised more than a million dollars since inception,” Cawthorn says. “We’ve had years when there were 80 riders participating when snow fell in May, and our best year saw more than 1,000 riders take part.”

For the 2021 event, all riders meet at McMahon Stadium on Aug. 22 in northwest Calgary. Kickstands are up at noon with a ride that heads west on Crowchild Trail to Stoney Trail, over to Deerfoot Trail to 32 Avenue to the Magic of Christmas warehouse. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at McMahon Stadium, while three food trucks will be at the warehouse, where live entertainment will be provided.

Any COVID restrictions that might be in place at the time of the ride will be adhered to. Cawthorn adds, “I emphasize this, we like to see every make, every model, every year and every size of powered two-wheeler.” Registration is $25. For more information visit yycawarenessride.com
