Chevy shares image of 2023 Corvette Z06 ahead of October debut

Expect a 5.5L V8 with a flat-plane crank and well over 600 horses

The gearheads at Chevrolet have already told us they will be officially unveiling a Z06 variant of their Stingray on October 26. Perhaps seeking to hold our interest – or simply whet our appetite for what will surely be the best-performing vehicle ever to roll out of Bowling Green – GM has graced us with a single uncamouflaged image of the upcoming King of Kentucky.

Larger-than-stock air intakes are shown, presumably affixed in an effort to huff as much atmosphere as possible back to the mid-mounted V8 engine. We’ll note that some owners of the last-gen Z06 complained bitterly about overheating issues, eventually leading to a class-action lawsuit and a fix which did involve some new components. Presumably, the company doesn’t want to deal with such problems this time around.

Chevrolet has promised the Z06 will be “a supercar unlike anything you’ve ever heard,” lending credence to the rumours of a flat-plane crank V8. Why? Because such engines have a unique firing order, creating the type of Ferrari-like scream instead of lumpen Chewbacca bellow we’ve come to expect from American V8 engines. Differences in exhaust routing can also have a major effect on sound.

What is absent in this official photo is the presence of a big wing. Spy shots – including of a camo’d machine in Chevy’s own teaser video – wore an aerodynamic device above its taillights big enough to double as a picnic table. The silver streak shown in this official image has a large spoiler mounted to the rear deck lid. Will there be different options for aero? Was Chevy just throwing us off the trail with that big wing?

We won’t have long to wait before finding out. The new Z06 remains scheduled for a splashy debut on October 26 and you can bet Driving will be there to bring you all the details.
