Confirmed: The Ford EcoSport is exiting the Canadian market

The departure of the subcompact SUV makes the Escape Ford's new entry-level utility

Say good-bye to the Ford EcoSport. The bite-sized SUV will be sold in Canada through mid-2022, and then it’s finito, a Ford of Canada spokesperson said today.

“After that we will continue to serve customers with parts, service, and warranty support,” says Ford communication manager Rosemary Pao.

The story is the same in the United States, where the EcoSport failed to find mass appeal.

Dwindling sales along with the end of production at Ford India, where the EcoSport is made, sealed the fate of the subcompact SUV.

Launched in Canada in 2018, the EcoSport was already available in hundreds of markets around the world. It entered a class where the competition remains white-hot, and judging by recent sales figures, the EcoSport was trending cold.

Hit hard during COVID-19, the EcoSport took a lashing. Just compare August 2021 sales to August 2020 in the U.S. and you’ll see sales decreasing by 64 per cent. U.S. analysts say the EcoSport was passed over for competitors including the Chevy Trax, Honda HR-V, and Nissan Kicks.

The exit of the EcoSport, priced at $23,399 in dealerships, will leave the compact Ford Escape as the brand’s least expensive SUV.

The closure of two plants in India after US$2 billion in losses will result in about 4,000 layoffs there.
