Having quick and reliable access to charging facilities is a key factor of electric car adoption in Canada, with those of us fortunate to have off-street parking facilities arguably having a leg up on those that do not. After all, it’s a lot easier to ‘plug in’ if one’s vehicle is parked in a driveway or safely ensconced in a garage or condo parking space.

While most of those facilities are near a standard household electrical outlet, more robust 240-volt outlets can be difficult to find. The more powerful electric service can add about 40km of ranger per hour of charge to an all-electric Chevy Bolt, meaning the majority of customers will be easily be able to top off their EV’s battery overnight using its Dual Level Charge Cord.

For eligible customers who already have Level 2 charging capability or don’t require it, GM is offering $750 worth of public charging credit at FLO stations.

This isn’t the first time Chevy has teamed up with the California-based Qmerit. In 2019, the companies joined forces to help EV customers more easily find and obtain quotes from pre-approved EV charging station installers. While this new initiative technically involves only the installation of a 240-volt outlet and not a standalone charger, the Dual Level Charge cord — when combined with the higher voltage service — will give Bolt owners everything they need to enjoy Level 2 charging capability at home.

Update, 6/18/2021 : GM has told Driving this program will specifically contribute up to $1500 towards the electrical work required to install a 240V outlet. If your home requires other work, such as upgrades to its electrical panel, this $1500 could help defray some of those costs. Smart customers will also investigate government programs which may be available to further assist with home energy improvements that relate to EVs.
