Ford adds the Edge to its ST performance lineup

Mid-sized SUV gets a 2.7-litre V6 from the F-150 along with other goodies – though there's no drift mode

We all know about the Ford Focus and Fiesta ST, two of the hottest little hatches you can buy. Now comes a much bigger hot hatch, the 2019 Ford Edge ST. Yes, the mid-size SUV is getting Ford’s full performance treatment, the first Ford SUV to go on the ST meal plan.

That performance is significant in the form of the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 lifted from the F-150 lineup. In the Edge, the ST engine produces 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, slightly less than F-150’s 400 lb.-ft., but still an increase over the current Edge Sport, which also uses the 2.7L, albeit tuned to 315 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Edge ST also gains an eight-speed automatic transmission with an ST-only sport button on the new, rotary-dial shifter. This mode ups throttle response, alters shift mapping and holds gears longer while, presumably, drifting through corners with the family and dog in back, although there is no “drift mode” per se. All-wheel drive with selectable traction control is standard, as is an ST-tuned sport suspension. A performance brake package is available, as are unique, 21-inch wheels.

The Edge ST gets unique new front and rear styling, a wide mesh grille for better cooling, deep side skirts and dual-exhaust outlets. ST interior design cues on the steering wheel, seat backs and scuff plates tag the Edge ST as different from more plebian 2019 Edges — which also get updates. That includes five more horsepower for the standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost and a new eight-speed automatic to replace the old six-speed.

A raft of new safety equipment comes available too, including post-collision braking, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise and lane centering, but these features will likely only be available in higher trim levels.

Inside, technology shifts up too, with optional wireless charging and a standard Wi-Fi hotspot that gives internet access to up to 10 devices. A redesigned center console is now anchored by that rotary gearshift dial, which also frees up space. A wider front grille, redesigned hood, freshened fascia and full LED headlamps round out the changes for the 2019 that, with the new ST model, will hit showrooms this summer after their full reveal at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 12.
