The news of an EV drivetrain should surprise no one, since the market is moving in that direction and GM has earmarked eleventy gazillion dollars ( US$35 billion , actually) towards the development and production of new electric vehicles. Some of their brands, such as Cadillac, are even saying they will “exit this decade” solely as a purveyor of electrified automobiles . It’s also worth noting that, deployed properly, an EV can produce world-destroying power and acceleration, a trait very much in line with the Camaro ethos.

But a Camaro sedan ? That’s a bridge too far.

Of course, we’ve been down this road before. Ford has appended the mighty Mustang name onto an all-electric four-door crossover, after all. Once all the wailing and gnashing of teeth settled down, most of us found the Mach-E to be a lot more entertaining than its body style might suggest. After all, the mighty GT Performance can apparently accelerate to highway speeds in eyeball-flattening 3.5 seconds. If an all-electric Camaro ZL1 1LE sedan can do the same, who are we to argue with progress? Also, recall the eCOPO Camaro shown above.

Aiding these rumours is the fact that GM hasn’t imbued the Camaro with any significant updates in far too long, leading to a drop in sales. This isn’t the first time the company has let Camaro wither on the vine, with the fourth-gen car enduring a decade-long run before having its plug pulled just in time for Dearborn to trot out an all-new Mustang of which they then went on to sell hand-over-fist.

None of this is confirmed, since the future product plans of a major automaker tend to be more fluid than the weather forecast.
