The recall encompasses 128,948 vehicles in the U.S. which could have defective connecting rod bearings, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The bearings can wear out early, which can lead to engine failure, stalling, or fire, any one of which could increase the likelihood of a crash. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning January 22, 2021.

To fix the issue, owners will need to bring their vehicle into a dealership to have the engine inspected. If technicians discover damage to the bearings, the entire engine will be replaced. A new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software will also be installed, which can monitor vibrations and notify owners of premature wear or damage.

Symptoms of the problem can include abnormal knocking noises from the engine; reduced power or hesitation; illumination of the “check engine” light or the engine oil-pressure warning light; or a burning smell, oil leaks, or smoke.

The number of vehicles affected in Canada has not yet been made known, but we will update this piece when it’s revealed.
