According to the recall, the control module for the anti-lock brake system (ABS) has a problem which can cause it to short out, which could lead to a fire.
In Canada, the recall affects 144,700 Hyundai Tucson models built between 2016 and 2021, but does not affect vehicles equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC).
To correct the problem, Hyundai says it will “notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to revise the ABS fuse wiring and update the ABS control module, if necessary.”
Hyundai is also recommending owners park their vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures, until the recall repairs have been completed. So far, Hyundai is aware of a dozen fires that have resulted from the problem, but has not reported any injuries.
Hyundai is continuing to investigate the recall, as it is part of an ongoing issue. To see if your vehicle is affected, visit the Transport Canada webpage that details the recall in full.
