That money gets you a six-speed manual transmission, and it’s $33,890 for the six-speed automatic. The GR86 Premium will start at $34,490 and $36,890, respectively, for stick or autobox.

For 2022, the GR86 gets a 2.4L horizontal flat-four engine that makes 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It replaces the outgoing 2.0L engine that produced 205 hp and 156 lb-ft, and that extra torque now also peaks much sooner – now at 3,700 rpm, rather than 6,400 rpm.

The new model is also lighter and more rigid, and has quicker acceleration times. With the manual, the zero-to-100-km/h sprint drops from 7.2 to 6.3 seconds.

Features on the base model include 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and dual-zone automatic climate control. When equipped with an automatic, the GR86 also adds adaptive cruise control, emergency front braking, and lane departure warning.

The Premium model adds 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, rear duckbill spoiler, leather and Alcantara upholstery, heated seats, aluminum pedals, adaptive headlamps, and blind-spot monitoring.

The rear-wheel-drive GR86 is based on the Subaru BRZ – hence the flat “boxer” engine – which of course is also updated for 2022. The new BRZ will start at $29,495, and tops out at $34,895 .
