GM promises 5G Telus network for its Canadian customers

It'll likely arrive for the 2025 model year, but those with 2019-and-newer vehicles will get it too

General Motors of Canada has announced it’s now working with Telus to connect its upcoming vehicles with Telus’ 5G network. The automaker said it’s the first time it has worked with a domestic communications company for connected-vehicle services for its Canadian customers, though a similar partnership is being launched in the U.S. with AT&T .

The two companies are working to enable high-performance wireless network capabilities, suitable for the unique needs of future all-electric and autonomous vehicles.

The enhancements will allow for improved roadway-centric coverage; faster and higher-quality music and video downloads; faster and more reliable over-the-air software updates with more security; and faster navigation, mapping, and voice services.

It’s expected that the first GM vehicles available with Telus’ high-performance 4G LTE and 5G network will be for model-year 2025. As well, 2019 and newer vehicles equipped for the current 4G LTE network will be able to move to the new Telus network. GM said this will give owners faster connectivity speed and some of the same performance benefits of the 2025 models equipped with 5G.

“Connectivity is already transforming the ownership experience for our drivers, and that trend will accelerate with our next-generation offerings,” said Scott Bell, president of GM Canada. General Motors first introduced its connected-vehicle services in Canada in 1999 with OnStar.
