Electrify Canada branching off into 'connected' home charging business

Electrify Canada is branching off from its public electric-vehicle (EV) infrastructure mandate with a new residential EV charger it plans to offer Canadians this fall.

The Volkswagen-owned company has erected 32 charging stations across Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia and has plans to triple that number by 2025 . But in the interim, it’s split off a new Electrify Home division that will shortly make available a Level 2 home charger called the HomeStation, starting at $1,099.

“With its adjustable charging power levels of up to 40 amps, HomeStation can deliver charging speeds of up to 9.6kW — 6.8 times faster than on a Level 1 charger,” Electrify Canada said in a press release. “This means capable vehicles can add up to 53 km of range per hour.”

The HomeStation will be Wifi-enabled and capable of connecting to a soon-to-be-launched Electrify Canada mobile app, which EV owners will be able to use to schedule charging sessions remotely, or to view their car’s view charging status. The app will also seamlessly integrate with the company’s public charging stations; and the HomeStation will be compatible with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, too.

Electrify Home says the charger can be installed indoors or outdoors, and that it comes with a 24-foot charging cable. DIY-ers can attempt installation themselves, hire a local electrician to do the job, or have the company tap approved installer Qmerit to schedule the work, at a cost starting at $1,275.
