It’s official! The bonkers Bugatti Bolide is the most beautiful hypercar in the world. Well, that’s according to a jury of design professionals, who handed the car the title at the 36th edition of the Festival Automobile International, held in Paris.

The prestigious competition, something like the premier beauty pageant of the automobile world, gave the Bolide top marks in the hypercar category. Nominees in this category must be “ produced in series, and sold for more than 60,000 euros [CDN$87,550].” They also need to display a sporty design and be capable of “outstanding performance.”

The Bugatti Bolide edged out three other finalists that included the BAC Mono (a finalist? really?); the Mercedes-AMG One; and Gordon Murray’s T.50.

In October 2020, the French carmaker first unveiled the Bolide as a wild experimental track-only prototype with a host of striking design elements. It’s almost impossible not to gawk at the hypercar’s low-slung profile, enhanced by massive hood scoops, Le Mans-style fenders, roof-top shark fin, and, of course, the X-shaped headlights.

Then, in August of this year, we carried a report that confirmed that Bugatti would go ahead with a limited production of the Bolide, no doubt spurred on by interest from well-heeled clients. There will be 40 units, each priced at an eye-watering US$4.69 million, and yes, unsurprisingly, they have all been sold.

Bugatti has promised that the production-spec Bolide will remain faithful to the prototype, with minimal tweaks to the engine output and design language. It will still be track-only, allowing Bugatti to fully explore the limits of performance in what is billed as a last hurrah for its famed W16 powerplant.
