Metro Vancouver offers $802 transit credit for users who trade in their cars
Would you get rid of your beater in exchange for eight months of free transit?

Vancouver is always trying to encourage its residents to live in an environmentally-conscious manner. It’s a part of the city’s west coast image, as well as a piece of the Greenest City Action plan to keep the centre on the “leading edge of urban sustainability.”

The most recent manifestation of these intentions comes in the form of an incentive program that awards residents an $802 credit with the city’s TransLink public transportation network if they give up their old gas-powered car or truck.
All accepted vehicles will head to the not-for-profit SCRAP-IT, which gives rebates in exchange for pre-owned cars. Residents who want to participate can choose between an adult transit pass (valid for eight months in Zone 1) or select a 14-month Compass Card. Both have a retail value of $802.
It’s not quite as useful as cash, but if you’re somebody who lives in the Vancouver area and is currently getting around in what may be referred to as a ‘beater’ that would only fetch a few hundred dollars on Facebook Marketplace, then this could be an opportunity to skip the selling process and head straight to the skytrain.
Not all vehicles qualify for the program. If you’re already driving something with an EV platform — even if it’s just a hybrid — you can’t participate (and likely wouldn’t want to, as your car is probably worth a good deal more than $802). You’ll also have to be able to prove that the fuel consumption on your current vehicle is more than 7.1 L/100km.
