Just in time for back to school, the City of Mississauga is implementing a new program designed to slow drivers and reduce collisions in areas next to homes, schools, and other community safe zones.

The Neighbourhood Area Speed Limit Project will institute new lower limits in specific “neighbourhoods” identified by the City, lower speed limits in school zones, and highlight “community safety zones” wherein certain offences may cost double.
Efforts to limit whole neighbourhood sections to 40 km/h began back in 2019, and today the map of included communities is expanding . Signage will be posted “at the entrances and exits to all neighbourhoods which will indicate when the neighbourhood area speed limits are in effect,” but the installation process may take “some time,” says the City.
School zones in the area will also move a touch slower and safer as speed limits are being dropped from 40 km/h to 30 km/h. Speed limits for schools on major routes will not change.

Community safety zones such as parks, school zones on public roadways, or other areas where “public safety is of special concern,” will also bear new signage promising “Fines Increased.” Set fines for speeding and other traffic signal related offences are doubled within safety zones.
The project is part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative aimed at eliminating motoring fatalities, but also fits like a glove with the province’s new MOMS Act that lowers the threshold and increases the penalties for stunting and other high-risk driving.
