Thanks to COVID-19, the Windsor, Ontario-built Dodge Grand Caravan has a slightly extended lease on life: production was originally due to end in May, but it will now continue through the end of August.

In the meantime, this uber-practical people-mover is being moved off dealer lots with some discounts. Unhaggle.com is showing savings of more than $9,000 on the SXT model, and as of this writing, the Dodge.ca website takes off another $2,643 to match employee pricing. Throw in FCA’s offer of no payments for 120 days for qualified buyers, and this turns into a way to get into an affordable new seven-passenger vehicle fast.

For the frugal-minded, the SXT trim is the one you want. It’s the least expensive way to get FCA’s Stow-and-Go seating in both the second and third rows, and it also includes roof racks so that you can transport plenty of stuff; and easy-clean floor mats that dry cereal won’t get crushed into permanently.

You’re giving up some niceties like power rear windows and aluminum wheels, but the powertrain is the same in every Dodge Grand Caravan: a 3.6-litre V6 driving the front axle and producing 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan poor ratings for driver’s-side overlap crash testing and for its headlights, but it receives good crashworthiness ratings otherwise. Because of the vehicle’s age – the fifth generation has been in production since the 2008 model year – more advanced safety features such as forward crash mitigation are not available.

There are no active recalls for the 2020 model year.

Based on an annual average driving distance of 20,000 km, the 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT is projected to have a resale value of $16,300 in 2023.

The 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT receives a $9,250 discount through Unhaggle, which leaves a sticker price of $31,970. This price includes freight and PDI along with other mandatory government fees but does not include sales tax.
