A pickup truck travelling in Paris, Ontario, was stopped by a police officer around 10:30 a.m. when it was discovered the licence plate number didn’t match up with the vehicle.

“They made the box into a licence plate and then put one of those really dark covers over it to hide it,” Const. Ken Johnston, of the OPP Brant county division, said Tuesday.

“The diaper box is what they used and then they put a printout of a licence plate over top of it,” he said. “That plate came as a TTC vehicle,” referring to a Toronto transit bus.

Johnston said the pickup truck wasn’t stolen, “the driver just wasn’t licensed and probably (had) no insurance.”

The male driver – whose identity OPP are not releasing – was charged with driving without a licence and driving without licence plates, said Johnston.

“We do see people manufacturing their own plates with hi-tech photocopying and put it on a vehicle and see how long it will go,” he said.

“This was just old-fashioned police work of running a plate and it not working out, but we do have an ALPR car (automatic licence plate reader) that takes photographs of licences as it’s passing vehicles, looking for those that are on a hot list, such as when a vehicle is stolen or the driver has a suspended licence or warrants out for the owner of the vehicle.

“In a case like this, that would have come up with this vehicle belonging to the TTC.”
