Ontario driver out $18k after getting rented Lamborghini impounded
Car rentals are expensive this year, but this is a whole new level

It’s advice I often give people uncertain of their next car purchase: before you possibly spend a lot of money on the wrong car, rent the one you’re considering. It will give you more of a feel for seat comfort, sightlines, how it handles on the highway as well as around town. Definitely more than a 15-minute test drive can reveal.

It can also you give more of a feel for the throttle, apparently. While I’m not sure if this 28-year-old driver was renting this Lamborghini Huracan with an eye to owning one in the future, they certainly found out the hard way a car being a rental comes with the same rules of the road as any other car.
$18,000. That will be the tab once the agency can get their car back. Racer-For-A-Day was caught by Peel Region Police doing 122 k/hr in a 60; we all know you’re not allowed to take these cars on the track, but this driver could have had a fabulous race day with a great car at Toronto Motorsport Park for a fraction of that cost, and had a helluva lot more fun.
A speed charge under stunt driving in Ontario now kicks in at 40 kilometres over the limit in an under-80 zone; the impoundment period has gone from 7 days to 14 (which this driver found out). If convicted, fines range from $2,000 to $10,000. Six demerit points and a maximum licence suspension of two years for a first conviction as well at a maximum of 6 months in jail. Insurance rates? Don’t make me laugh.
Paying out the rental agency for a 14-day rental? Priceless.
