2022 Ford Bronco earns new colour options, ditches others

Classic Bronco fans, heads up: Ford reached into the history books for one of them

It would be easy for the Blue Oval to simply let its Bronco slide into 2022 with no changes, given all the goodwill it has received from the motoring press and real-world customers alike (well, save for the hardtop fiasco ).

But update it Ford has, imbuing the options sheet with a pair of new colours, one of which dips into the pages of Ford history for inspiration. Ford Bronco designers are said to have developed the new Eruption Green Metallic as a modern interpretation of Mallard Green, which was featured on the first-gen Bronco over four decades ago.

“Automotive enthusiasts, and especially Bronco fans, are passionate about colors,” said Barb Whalen, Ford color and materials manager. “Paint has a wonderful way of evolving because of technology. Eruption Green is a contemporary color but there’s a connection with Bronco heritage. It’s evergreen-inspired, with yellow highlights that really tie it into nature.”

Marketing fluff aside, the curiously named Eruption Green does look good on the Bronco, playing well with the model’s square jaw and chiseled appearance. We should have expected this type of fettling, since Jeep changes up its Wrangler palette from time to time. Since Ford is hell bent on stealing Jeep’s lunch money, this probably won’t be the last new colour we see on the Bronco. Also new for 2022 is Hot Pepper Red, a metallic option not shown in these digital images.

Every new dawn is generally accompanied by a couple of closing doors, and this is no exception. Ford says the colours of Antimatter Blue, Lightning Blue Metallic, and Rapid Red Metallic will be available exterior color options until the end of the 2021 model year; if you like one of those shades but have been sitting on your hands, now’s the time to act.

We’ve asked our friends at Ford if these changes also apply to Canadian-market Bronco SUVs but there is no reason to think they would not. This post will be updated if they inform us differently. Orders for 2022 Bronco two- and four-door, including with Eruption Green and Hot Pepper Red, will open later this year.
