Plugged In: Jump-starting Canada's auto industry
Union boss Jerry Dias tells us how EVs have saved the country's car manufacturing business
Article content
Jerry Dias’ main job as the president of Unifor is protecting his membership’s livelihoods. But the man representing the country’s largest private sector union, counting more than 300,000 Canadians, has recently presided over a number of major announcements by automakers that will see billions of dollars invested in electric vehicle manufacturing in the country.
In Dias’ estimation, this has dramatically changed the fortunes, and future, for autoworkers, and also presents an unprecedented opportunity for Canada to become a world leader in not just the building of EVs, but in the research, development and assembly of the building blocks that make up an electric vehicle. And his call for a national ‘Car Czar’ is integral for us to get there.
