Ontario’s towing industry has been the subject of constant media scrutiny of late, and for good reason. Until the arrival of the province’s new industry regulations packaged within the MOMS Act, the towing scene has been a free-for-all.

Though drivers may be lured by the low barrier for entry, high costs of truck ownership and a crowded market have put the squeeze on folks. In an under-regulated game where the first hook on the scene gets the worm, roadways become race tracks — and roadsides can become wrestling rings. Here are just a few of the incidents which caught our attention recently.

Halton police nabbed this operator at more than double the 50 km/k limit in a community safety zone. They report that this is the driver’s fourth charge this year, so how are they still driving? Remember: a charge is only the first step toward a conviction, so this driver will still need to have their day(s) in court.

Back in Milton, these four tow trucks needed towing after OPP caught them street racing along highway 401. The drivers are alleged to have been speeding, weaving between traffic, and racing down paved shoulders.

A news helicopter caught this brawl along live lanes on Highway 401. Presumably escalating out of a dispute over who would hook a stalled vehicle, more trucks and passersby stopped to try to break up the fight. The drivers all fled before police could respond.

Ontario tow driver charged after allegedly attempting to cause crashes

Police responded to reports of another dangerous driver after receiving reports that this tow truck was actively attempting to cause accidents. We’ve seen some questionable behaviour in response to crash scenes, but trying to run people off the road is something else altogether.
