New Colorado caught testing in, er, Colorado

A spy photographer has caught the next-generation Chevy Colorado in high-altitude testing in — you guessed it — Colorado. Though dressed in heavy camouflage, we can make out the Colorado’s signature boxed flares, and — is that a fifth-gen Chevy Malibu in the background? Those still exist?
The current Colorado has been with us for seven years now, and is well due for an upgrade. The new quarter-ton truck appears to occupy a similar footprint to its predecessor, an impression consistent with its expected evolution of that truck’s GMT31XX platform.

This appears to be the same short-bed crew-cab configuration that first popped up earlier this year, but GM is keeping any further trim insight anonymous with the use of those 6-lug steel wheels. Interestingly, however, mesh on the bonnet camouflage points to possible hood vents. Perhaps more importantly, we’re crossing our fingers that all of that effort in window camo means a significantly revamped interior.
Not much is known on the powertrain front, though that tailpipe and breathable grille mesh seem safe reassurance that the Colorado isn’t going electric just yet. The safest money will be on a development of the 2.5 L EcoTec, though time will tell whether the six-speed auto is here to stay, or whether under-eight transmissions have had their day.
