Spied! Will Toyota offer a premium 'Capstone' trim on its all-new Tundra?

Someone spotted the reportedly range-topping truck outside a Toyota facility in Texas, and it sure looks real to us

Big trucks are big business, and automakers are increasingly piling the luxury features onto the upper trims. For example, we recently reported on the upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate , for those who don’t think the top-line Denali throws enough stuff into the mix.

Now it looks like Toyota might be catching up. It finally gave a long-awaited, third-generation makeover to its full-size Tundra , and now the Internet is abuzz over a photo of a chrome-bedecked version that wears a “Capstone” trim badge.

Supposedly the photo was leaked on a Reddit post that was later deleted. It showed a line of trucks outside of a Toyota facility in Texas that includes the Capstone model. Other badges indicate that this one carries a hybrid engine, although it’s entirely possible a Capstone trim could be used with the gas-only option, just as other truck companies combine their top-trim features with more than one powertrain.

The Reddit post was picked up by Pickup Truck + SUV Talk on YouTube , but when host Tim Esterdahl asked Toyota for confirmation , he got what we all expected: “No comment.” We at Driving.ca haven’t bothered reaching out to Toyota Canada about any Capstone news, because we know it’s the reply we’ll get as well.

But as Esterdahl said in a video, the picture doesn’t look like a Photoshop job, and Toyota “isn’t denying that this truck exists.” Based on that, we agree with his assumption that the Capstone is real and will be officially announced sometime in the future.

New-to-Tundra features on this next-gen model include a fully-boxed frame, rear coil springs, and a weight-saving composite bed, giving it a smoother and, yes, more luxurious ride. The new engine choices provide more horsepower and torque as well.

In Canada, the 2022 Tundra’s trim levels, in order, are the SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro. That last one comes only in 4×4 Crew Max with the hybrid system, but it’s designed more for off-road, with smaller forged BBS wheels to hold taller tires, an electronic locking rear differential, crawl control, front Fox bypass shocks, and lifted suspension. It’s not hard to imagine Toyota adding a model that equals the TRD Pro’s spot at the top of the trim walk, but designed more for pavement-only people than outdoor enthusiasts.
