To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Subaru has confirmed the newest member of the Wilderness family is in fact the 2022 Forester.
The company made the announcement official in a press release on Wednesday after months of teaser imagery, videos, and specification leaks hinting at the Forester joining the Outback with its own off-road trim.
“This addition marks the reveal of the most rugged and capable Forester in the model’s history,” the Japanese automaker said in the release. “Like the Outback Wilderness, Subaru has taken the Forester and added extensive new features to create a vehicle better equipped for off-road excursions.”

Confirmed in the announcement were features like additional ground clearance and all-terrain tires to bring out the adventurous driver in you. The towing capacity has also doubled from the base Forester to 3,000 pounds, and the roof rack boasts the ability to carry 800 pounds of static load and 220 pounds of dynamic load.
The interior is covered with all-weather materials, including mats and a waterproof rear tray for all your muddy outback excursions.
Subaru is also improving on the technology of the Forester, adapting many of the familiar driver-assistance technologies for more treacherous terrains. The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, for instance, has been improved to account for ground clearance and tire upgrades, including emergency automatic steering, braking, and accelerating.
The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness will be slightly more expensive than its plainer sibling, starting at $33,495, and is expected to arrive in Canadian showrooms by November 2021.
