The Sport-tech trim will start at $32,495 with a stickshift, and $34,895 with an autobox. The BRZ is the company’s only model that doesn’t have all-wheel-drive; instead, the engine exclusively powers the rear wheels.

The next-generation BRZ includes an all-new 2.4L four-cylinder, horizontally-opposed and naturally-aspirated, making 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It replaces the previous 2.0L engine that made 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft. The close-ratio six-speed stick-shift is updated for 2022, as is the automatic transmission, which includes paddle shifters and downshift blip control.

It rides on a “revamped chassis,” which Subaru says is more rigid and with a lower centre of gravity than before, and with a longer wheelbase. To reduce weight, the car receives an aluminum roof and front fenders, for a curb weight of 1,277 kg (2,815 lbs). The company also claims an improved front-to-rear weight distribution over the outgoing model.

The 2022 BRZ also receives a new electric power steering system, quicker 13.5:1 steering ratio, smaller-diameter steering wheel, and with the automatic, five settings for the vehicle stability control, including the ability to turn it off completely.

There’s also a new interior, with customizable 7-inch digital instrument cluster, contoured sport bucket seats, 8-inch centre screen, standard push-button start, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For the first time, the BRZ will also include EyeSight, Subaru’s camera-based suite of driver assist technologies, including adaptive cruise control, emergency front braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlamps. The Sport-tech models further include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and models with an automatic transmission have reverse emergency braking.

The BRZ is also the basis for the Toyota 86, which of course is also all-new for 2022, but Toyota said it will release pricing closer to that model’s on-sale date in December 2021.
