Subaru recalls 12,601 vehicles in Canada for faulty fuel pumps

The recall also affects the Subaru-based Toyota 86 sports car

Subaru is recalling 12,601 vehicles in Canada for the possibility of fuel pump failure, which could potentially cause the engine to run rough, prevent it from starting, lose power while driving, or illuminate the “check engine” light.

The recall affects certain vehicles from model-year 2018 to 2020.

The vehicles affected are:

  • 2019 Ascent
  • 2018 – 2019 BRZ
  • 2018 Forester
  • 2018 – 2019 Impreza
  • 2018 – 2019 Impreza WRX
  • 2018 – 2019 – 2020 Legacy
  • 2018 – 2019 – 2020 Outback

The recall also affects 232 copies of the 2018 and 2019 Toyota 86, which is based on the Subaru BRZ and uses its powertrain.

It’s not the first time for a fuel pump problem. In April of 2020, Subaru had to recall 13,744 vehicles, from its lineup of the 2019 Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, and Outback.

It’s been an issue for other manufacturers as well. In March 2021, Honda recalled 80,176 vehicles, including Acura models, for the same problem. In October 2020, Toyota had to recall 126,957 vehicles for their fuel pumps.

For the current Subaru recall, Transport Canada has issued recall number 2021-466. Subaru will notify owners of affected vehicles, instructing them to visit a dealer to have the fuel pump replaced at no charge.

To find out if your vehicle is affected, visit Transport Canada’s recall database , or Subaru’s consumer website , or call Subaru’s customer service at 1-800-894-4212. Those who own a Toyota 86 can visit Toyota’s website , or call customer service at 1-888-869-6828.

For either manufacturer, you will need your 17-digit vehicle information number (VIN), which will be on your ownership, or visible on the vehicle’s driver-side dash through the windshield.
