Toyota's all-new 2022 GR 86 sees a power bump but still looks very BRZ-ish

Both the 86 and its Subaru sibling are getting a bigger engine and performance improvements

Toyota has announced its all-new second-generation 2022 GR 86 goes on sale in the fall of 2021, with more power and improved performance, and with the coveted Gazoo Racing (GR) badge.

The 86 is a twin to the Subaru BRZ – the only vehicle that company makes without all-wheel-drive – which obviously has been updated similarly for 2022. The wheelbase is longer, the rear track is wider, and torsional rigidity improves 50 per cent.

The previous 2.0L four-cylinder engine has been replaced with a 2.4L four-cylinder, still naturally-aspirated and horizontally-opposed. Other power tweaks include changes to the intake and exhaust systems, while the optimized Toyota dual-injection technology helps cool the cylinders and allows for a compression ratio of 12.5:1.

Power rises from 205 hp to 228 hp, and torque from 156 to 184 lb-ft, when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission is also available, optimized for extra torque capacity, and with adaptive controls for better shifting based on what’s happening with the brake and accelerator. Peak torque now arrives at 3,700 rpm, while the previous 86 hit it at 6,600 rpm. Zero-to-100 km/h times have dropped from 7.2 to 6.3 seconds with the stickshift, and from 8.2 to 6.8 seconds with the autobox.

The new model has a lower centre of gravity, and weight-saving materials and construction make for a curb weight of slightly more than 1,270 kg. Styling cues include a mesh grille, LED headlights, sill spoilers, and front vents with ducts in the bumper and wheelhouse to distribute airflow.

Seven colours will be available, including Track bRed and Trueno Blue.

An 8-inch multimedia touchscreen is standard, including Bluetooth, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and trial access to connected services. Models with an automatic transmission include Subaru’s EyeSight assist system, which includes adaptive cruise control, emergency front braking, lane-departure warning, and high-beam assist. Pricing for all models will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch.
