The Corolla Cross rides on the same platform as its Corolla sedan sibling, and comes powered by a 169-horsepower 2.0L four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT gearbox and good for 7.3 L/100 km in combined driving.

But Cross offers something its car-shaped brother doesn’t: a “Dynamic Torque Control All Wheel Drive system,” which normally operates in FWD but can send up to 50 per cent of power to the rear axle when things get hairy. AWD models net about 7.8 L/100 km (combined city/highway) and add a premium of about $1,400 to the cost of a FWD equivalent.

When it comes to trims, the first step on the ladder is the L, which comes with an MSRP of $24,890, or $26,290 with AWD. It’s base, but it still comes standard with a 4.2-inch full-colour multi-information display and heated seats.

Moving up to LE – $27,090, or $28,490 with AWD, to start – adds a heated leather steering wheel and other features like a Blind-Spot Monitor. Moving up to the LE Premium bumps MSRP to $30,590 and makes AWD standard, but really starts to pile on the goodies, including power moon roof, a wireless charging system for compatible smartphones, and Toyota’s Connected Services package.

The range-topper will be the XLE, which adds to the LE Premium a nine-speaker JBL Audio system, seven-inch full-colour display, power adjustable driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning. It will put you back $33,990, though.

The Toyota Corolla Cross hits Canadian dealerships later in October.
