The OPP Highway Safety Division posted the clip to Twitter, noting that the both drivers involved in the collision were “lucky” to have avoided serious injury.

The video appears to be from the perspective of a semi truck traveling in the centre lane of the 401 North of Toronto, following a group of cars driving rather close to each other. Suddenly, a black sedan attempting to change lanes for a pass on the left swerves violently back to the right, clipping the rear end of the silver pickup in the lane over and sending it flipping sideways down the road before returning in a panicked swerve of its own to collide with the truck again.
“Your day can go from ordinary to extraordinary in an instant. Please drive carefully,” the OPP writes in the Tweet, adding that the driver of the car was charged with careless driving.
Twitter commenters were quick to point out that the carnage occurred in the oft-combative left lane, suggesting that further driver education on proper highway-traffic-flow etiquette is required.

Others pointed out that although those lane laws might be vital on limit-free roads like Germany’s Autobahn, our roads have speed limits that don’t just pertain to the lanes on the right.

This recent incident — and the resultant charges — clearly demonstrate that regardless of what lane you’re travelling in, the laws of the road (and physics) always apply.
