The NHTSA lists the recall as affecting up to 553 hardtop Broncos across the U.S., specifically those with build dates between July 18, 2021; and August 17, 2021. Owners will be mailed notification letters in November, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag, free of charge.
According to the Chronology section of the Safety Recall Report, posted on the NHTSA website, Ford’s supplier, Joyson, informed the company that during some routine tests, some airbags opened prematurely.
Further investigating found the improperly fold airbags to be associated with one of six employees assigned to that operation, who was adding an extra fold to the design. No injuries tied to the defect have been reported.
