“Members located the vehicle going through [Banff National Park] and when they attempted to stop it, again the vehicle did not stop. The Canmore RCMP then joined the chase outside Banff National Park when they located the vehicle at the Husky gas station in Dead Man’s Flats. The driver then rammed one of the two police cars that approached it,” said Corporal Shane Fletcher with Canmore RCMP.

“There was minor front end damage, and no injuries sustained at the time,” confirmed Fletcher.

“It then fled for a third time shortly after at 8 p.m. The Calgary police’s Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) were able to assist and trail the vehicle from the air travelling towards Calgary near Morley, police from Stoney Nakoda were able to deploy a spike belt on Highway 1A. The suspect then fled on foot until he was caught shortly afterwards. There was also a stolen dirt bike in the back of the truck.”

“HAWCS are able to fly at night and help us with high risk events, they are a valuable asset for us out here,” said Fletcher.

“The male charged has been identified as Robert Ellerbeck, a 37-year-old from Calgary, who had significant history with police.”
