The Mirai set a Guinness World Record this past weekend with an astounding 845-mile (1,360-kilometre) drive along Southern California on a single tank of hydrogen. To make the feat even more impressive, the fill of hydrogen took just five minutes to complete.
“In 2016, the Toyota Mirai was the first production fuel-cell electric vehicle available for retail sale in North America, and now the next-generation Mirai is setting distance records,” Toyota Motor North America executive vice-president Bob Carter said in a press release. “We are proud to be leaders of this exciting technology, which is just one of a growing lineup of zero-emission vehicles in our portfolio.”
Professional drivers Wayne Gerdes and Bob Winger manned the Mirai over a two-day trip on August 23 and 24, 2021. The Mirai was filled with 5.65 kilograms of hydrogen before starting the trip from Toyota’s Technical Centre (TTC) in Gardena, California.

The loop passed through some of California’s most notable destinations on Day 1, going through Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, and Malibu Beach before returning to TTC with 473 miles (761 kilometres) logged. Day 2 was a little more anti-climatic with traffic through San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County before cruising back to TTC with the remaining 372 miles (599 kilometres).
“As a Guinness World Record adjudicator for 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness incredible attempts, including several distance-related feats,” Guinness World Record adjudicator Michael Empric added in the release. “The Toyota Mirai’s journey without the need to refuel showcases the power of fuel-cell electric technology. This technology and the design ingenuity by the team at Toyota led to a history-making moment.”
Through it all, not a single pound of CO2 was emitted by the Mirai.
